When we first took Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central ERP on as one of our cloud offerings, one of my first questions when learning about the software and how it was licensed was what exactly is included in the Essentials and Premium licenses.

Wondering what the difference is between Essentials and Premium? Check out this blog post we did ‘What’s the Difference Between Dynamics 365 Business Central Essentials vs. Premium Licenses?’

In this article, we will be taking a deeper dive into the modules and functionality that are included in the Essentials license.

The Essentials license provides a wide range of operational and management capabilities, including:

  • Financial Management
  • AI-Supported Forecasting
  • E-Services
  • Customer Relationship Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Project Management
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Warehouse Management and Inventory

Take a look at the chart below that I found very helpful, that provides a full, detailed list of the functionality that you would receive with Essentials:

1For feature availability in your region, consult https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/about-localization
2Requires Intelligent Edge or Azure Machine Learning subscription
3Dynamics 365 Sales Integration requires a Dynamics 365 Sales license
4Support for sales tax or VAT depending on country of deployment

Does your organization require service or manufacturing capabilities? The Premium license gives you these extra modules which would enable businesses to manage service orders, contracts, and items, production orders, bills of materials, and machine centers.

The choice of license depends on your business needs and goals, the best question to answer is what are your core business functions and processes? If you only need to manage basic functions, such as accounting, inventory, purchasing, sales, and project management, then the Essentials license may be enough for you. If you also need to manage service or manufacturing operations, then you may need the Premium license.
