Our friends at Avalara just posted this news, which will be important for many CAL Business Solutions clients.

“The Connecticut Department of Revenue has posted an Important Notice on its website announcing new online filing requirements for 2014. Online filing will allow the department to streamline tax collection while being more environmentally friendly.

Effective January 1, 2014, anyone and everyone registered for any of the following tax types must file returns and pay taxes online:

  • Sales and use tax;
  • Business use tax;
  • Room occupancy tax;
  • Admissions and dues tax;
  • Income tax withholding;
  • Corporations business tax; and
  • Composite income tax.

Connecticut taxpayers be warned: “Penalties will apply if you fail to file and remit electronically.” (Emphasis theirs).

If you file your own taxes, you’ll want to read the department’s important notice thoroughly. It explains the benefits of filing online, due dates for monthly, quarterly and annual filers, and the fact that paper returns will no longer be mailed to taxpayers as in the past: “Failure to receive a paper return does not relieve you of your obligation to file.”

You could worry about this new online filing requirement. Or you could switch to an automated sales tax solution.”
