Best Practices for Year-End Closing in Fixed Assets
When performing year-end closing for Fixed Assets, Microsoft recommends specific procedures:
- Timing: Close all books in Fixed Assets after closing Payables Management (especially if you’re interfacing assets from Payables to Fixed Assets), but before closing the General Ledger year.
- Complete Depreciation: All assets must be ‘depreciated through’ the last day of the current Fixed Assets year before closing. This is EXTREMELY important for accurate financial reporting.
- Book Closing Order: Close the year for each ‘Book’ you have set up. All ‘Books’ should be closed before running depreciation for the new year.
- Important Warning: DO NOT manually edit the year in the Book Setup window to run depreciation for the next year and then change it back before closing the current year. This can cause assets to over-depreciate in the next year.
- No Undo Process: If you accidentally close the Fixed Asset year twice, be aware that there is no Fixed Asset year-end UNDO process. You may need to restore from backup if this occurs.

Planning for the Future
With Microsoft’s announced timeline for Dynamics GP support, organizations should consider their long-term ERP strategy:
- Ongoing Support: CAL will continue to support your GP system as long as you need.
- Current Updates: Stay current with the latest releases, such as the October 2024 release (version 18.7), which includes various enhancements across different areas of the product.
- Migration Planning: If you plan to eventually transition to another ERP solution like Dynamics 365 Business Central or Acumatica, ensure your Dynamics GP is updated to the most recent version for the smoothest migration path.
- Compliance Considerations: Maintain regular updates to ensure regulatory compliance, especially for tax reporting and financial statement requirements.
