Hello everyone:
I hope your summer has been good so far. It's been busy here at CAL. In addition to several new customers, we have also been working to get our customers that are still running older versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP upgraded to Version 10. I have had the chance to train many users on how to get the most out of the new version. What I have found is that there are many features that are not "new" to Version 10 but are not being used or are even unknown to most users.
This month's tip is not new to Version 10. In fact, the tip will work with older versions of GP. Let me know what you think of this tip. I have found it to be very popular in training.

Focus On ROI: Training Too often Dynamics GP training is like a big version of the whisper game. The consultants train the trainers, usually functional leads, who then train the rest of the users. When employees leave or change positions, they train their replacements, maybe. With each training pass, a little more knowledge leaks from the system. Occasionally, there's some re-training, usually around a major upgrade. Alternatively, a new hire may have Dynamics GP experience he or she brings in to the organization. But really, that's about it. This issue isn't unique to Dynamics GP, it's prevalent across the ERP space. There have been a rash of public company restatements lately where the blame was laid squarely on inadequate training in the accounting and finance functions. Training is an important part of making the most of your investment in anything really, but more so for your investment in Dynamics GP. And that's what we're going to talk about in this installment of Focus On ROI.

What to expect when you're expecting an upgrade to Dynamics GP 10.0 So you've decided to move up and take advantage of the newest features in Dynamics GP 10.0, and you want CAL to help in upgrading you. Great! We've been working on streamlining the upgrade process, getting you up to snuff on the latest and greatest version of your ERP software.
The first step is to call or email Phil Franco at CAL. He's easily reached at 860-485-0910 x 3103 or at nancyb@calszone.com, and let him know that you'd like to be put on the list to be upgraded. We use an innovative SharePoint site to track all the requests, so we'll be sure to keep your request moving through the system.
Next, you'll be notified of any system requirements that may need to be fulfilled before we move ahead. This includes a discovery call where we get all the details of your particular instance of Dynamics GP. Next, we'll go into your version history and get information on any customizations you might have and update them for version 10.0. We'll also get information about any 3rd party applications you might be running. And after we've gathered all the information, we'll give you a quote for the time it will take, based on all the particulars, to accomplish a smooth transition to version 10.0. Once approved, you can expect to be down for about a day, depending on the specifics of your system.
Once complete, we recommend getting training on the latest features and aspects of version 10 that you haven't seen before. Security is one crucial aspect of Dynamics GP 10, at the very least, learning how to change security settings and role-based security for employees is strongly recommended.
