The CAL Zone e-newsletter is focused on our family of Great Plains users. Stay up to date with current promotions to save you money plus tips & tricks and new tools to save you time.

Hello everyone:

It was nice to meet so many of you at our recent CAL Customer Appreciation Day. I enjoyed the opportunity to demonstrate some of the new features in Great Plains 9.0.

Tip #1: Instructions for Mail Merge in Microsoft Word

This month's tip is a step-by-step set of instructions from Microsoft on how to use Mail Merge in Microsoft Word. Click here for instructions.

For information on the Letter Writing Assistant feature for Great Plains 8.0 and 9.0, scroll down to the "What's New in GP 9.0" section of this newsletter.

Tip #2: Prevent GL Account Use

Do you have General Ledger accounts that you would like more control over? For example, would you like to prevent users from changing the CASH account hit for transactions? Would you like to prevent users from overwriting the default AP account in a transaction? Would you like to prevent users making adjustments on the AR account through a Journal Entry?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, I have a tip that you will appreciate. In Great Plains 8.0, a new option for GL accounts was introduced. You can unclick a box on the Account Card (CARDS>FINANCIAL>GENERAL) titled "Allow Account Entry".

Per Microsoft: Mark this option if you want to allow users to manually enter this account in transaction or distribution entry windows. If you unmark this option, you will not be able to manually enter this account in a transaction or distribution entry window.
When: March 11 - 14, 2007
Where: San Diego Convention Center in California
Why: To Learn More about Great Plains, and Have Fun doing it!!

In about 6 months, thousands of Microsoft Dynamics users will be gathering in San Diego, California. Will you be one of them?

Did you know attending Convergence 2007 can earn you CPE credit?

Convergence is Microsoft's premier event for Great Plains users. You will have a chance to attend training sessions, practice what you learn in Hands-On labs and preview the latest and greatest features that are on the horizon.

I attended Convergence 2005 which was in San Diego. The location of the San Diego Convention Center is amazing. It is right on the water in Downtown San Diego near the Gaslamp Quarter which is home to over 90 restaurants, music venues, and night clubs. You are also minutes from the World Famous San Diego Zoo and Sea World.

I moved to Connecticut from San Diego last year. As Convergence 2007 gets closer, I will be putting together some recommendations of my favorite restaurants and attractions.

Future newsletters will focus on specific features of this important event. If you are interested in more information, please contact me.

P.S. The average temperature in San Diego for that time of year is 60 degrees vs. 34 degrees for Connecticut.

At this year's Customer Appreciation Day, I was able to demonstrate many of the new features of Great Plains 9.0. The demo was a great success. The people that left were so excited about the new features we decided to start planning events to share the demo with those of you that couldn't attend.

We are working out the plans and will be sending invitations out in separate emails. I wanted to see if you could let me know which of the following you prefer:
  • Online Demonstration
  • Live Demonstration - at locations in various parts of Connecticut.

Please reply to this email to let me know what you prefer. If the majority of you prefer a live demonstration, we will advise once the venues are booked. We would provide light snacks and have a brief Q&A after the demo. If most of you prefer an Online Demonstration, we will advise of dates and times available. (You would have to provide your own light snack)

New Feature Review: Letter Writing Assistant and SmartList

In Great Plains 8.0, Microsoft introduced the Letter Writing Assistant. This allows you to use letter templates for Customers, Vendors, and Employees. You can create new letters from scratch or base on an existing letter template.

In Great Plains 9.0, they have added the ability to use the Letter Writing Assistant from within SmartList. For example: Create a query in SmartList for all customers that have spent more than $10,000 the last year, and send them a special "Thank You" letter. The possibilities are endless!!
Hello Everyone:

I hope you enjoyed this month's newsletter. This has been a busy summer. We have added several new customers. In fact, I want to say a special welcome to those of you who are reading The CAL Zone newsletter for the first time. We keep an archive of our old newsletters on our website.

I want to also welcome two new employees to CAL. First, let me introduce you to Brenda Wiley. Brenda has partnered with CAL on several projects over the past few years. She is now on our staff full time and is helping with implementations and upgrades for our Great Plains customers.

We also added Dawn Pleil. She worked with CAL several years ago. She is back now and will be helping Ron with writing customizations that integrate with Great Plains.

I also want to thank all of you who made it to our 2nd Annual CAL Customer Appreciation Day. It was so nice to spend time with you and to have the chance to get to know you better. I hope you had a good time!

We are working hard to be your trusted advisor as well as "that company that does Great Plains". If you ever have a question, please feel free to call or email me.

Thank you,

George Mackiewicz
